National Hellenic Invitational Basketball Tournament in Chicago – NHIBT

[CHICAGO, IL, USA] The board of directors of the National Hellenic Invitational Basketball Tournament announces its 2026 Hall of Fame class in advance of the 96th annual tournament, to be played March 27-29 at the state-of-the-art Connect-44 facility in Lombard, Illinois. The official Hall of Fame induction ceremonies will be held Sunday afternoon prior to NHIBT championship games.
The NHIBT, founded in 1931 during the Depression, was first hosted at a now demolished gymnasium on the site of DePaul University’s North Side campus. The NHIBT is America’s oldest and longest-running Greek basketball tournament. Many players call it their “NBA,” being able to continue careers long past the time their high school and college eligibility elapsed. Lifelong friendships and professional associations have ensued thanks to the community and support system of this grand old tournament, which is also the second oldest tournament of any kind whatsoever in the USA, surpassed by a few short years by the Illinois High School Athletic Association tournament.
Throughout the years, the NHIBT has been played at DePaul, Cicero Stadium, Fenwick H.S., Elmhurst College, Connect-44 and a number of area Greek Orthodox churches. The tournament has featured a wealth of NCAA talent and in fact two NHIBT players also played in the NBA – Nick Mantis of the then Minneapolis Lakers and currently John Poulakidas of the Dallas Mavericks, who suited up briefly for the Ypsilanti Sons of Pericles as a high school senior (c.2021) before continuing his career at Yale University and then on to the NBA G-League and today he’s a 2-way player for the Mavericks’ NBA team.

For questions about volunteering for this event, please contact us at NHIBT.INC@gmail.com or phone 630.277.7641. Academic credits may apply. The NHIBT is a 501-c-3 not-for-profit. Donations are tax deductible. The following is the full list of 2026 inductees, bios and photographs (alphabetical order):

JIM BALABAN (St. Demetrios – Chicago)

Jim Balaban, NHIBT, hall of fame, greek basketball, chicago greeks, national hellenic invitational basketball tournament

Jim Balaban, 2026 NHIBT HOF inductee

Growing up in the inner-city streets of Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood—long before its transformation— I found a safe haven at the DePaul Settlement House, where my love for basketball and baseball first took root. The passion for basketball deepened when my family began attending Saint Demetrios Church on the city’s North Side. It was there that I developed not only as a player, but as a person, forming lifelong relationships within a community I consider family.

Under the guidance of coaches such as Tom Panouses and Frank Nicholson, and alongside teammates and close friends, including my basketball brothers, Steve and Jimmy Pappas, Pete Kanavos, Kirk Vidas, and Bill Rozakis, I spent nearly two decades immersed in the game. Saint Demetrios basketball was more than competition—it was a culture built on brotherhood, tradition, and pride.

Beginning in the GOBL weekly church league, I went on to compete in tournaments across the country, in cities like Boston, Denver, Detroit, Milwaukee, etc.  However, the highlight of my basketball journey was participation in The NHIBT, which is considered by many the most prestigious of all tournaments. One I truly looked forward to each and every year. Cicero Stadium was the Home of The NHIBT for over sixty years. Each year’s tournament brought together competition, community, and a shared celebration of Greek heritage.

For me, Greek basketball and the NHIBT were not just activities but a “Way of Life.” I remain deeply proud and grateful for the experiences, relationships, and memories that continue to shape me today. Through these experiences, it built lasting friendships and memories that extended far beyond the court.

I want to say thank you to the NHIBT committee for bestowing me this honor.

CONNIE BARKOULIES (Boston, MA)

connie barkoulies, nhibt hall of fame, greek basketball, national hellenic invitational basketball tournament, chicago greeks

Connie Barkoulies, NHIBT HOF Class of 2026

Connie Barkoulies’ basketball journey has been defined by a lifelong love of the game, deep family roots, and a lasting commitment to the Hellenic basketball community. A standout at the high school level, Connie earned IHSA All‑Conference and All‑Area honors, and her talent led to an invitation to compete with the Greek U20 Women’s Team. She continued her competitive career at DePaul University, playing through the Club program and helping lead the team to its first‑ever National Tournament appearance at Ohio State, a milestone achievement in the program’s history.

Connie has been a part of the NHIBT since her early childhood, growing up on the courts watching and aspiring to emulate many of the great Hellenic athletes who came before her. She was first introduced to the game and coached by her father, Peter Barkoulies, who remains her most influential mentor and confidant. Her journey would not have been possible without the unwavering support of her parents, brother, and extended family, who have always shown up to cheer her on no matter the distance.

Connie Barkoulies and her NHIBT running-mates

Over the years, Connie has captured 6+ NHIBT championships and all-tournament honors, including titles with Boston, Group Home, and Papaflessas. She has been fortunate to play alongside and against some of the top Hellenic talent but is most proud to take the court with lifelong friends who have become family to her on Team Boston. Connie continues to compete in the NHIBT today and hopes to do so for years to come. Off the court, Connie is a CPA and Director at EY‑Parthenon, where she works in the firm’s Strategy & Execution practice.

Being inducted into the NHIBT Hall of Fame is a profound honor for Connie, especially alongside many of the great players and contributors she grew up admiring. It represents not only a personal achievement, but a lifelong connection to the game, Hellenic community, and the NHIBT values.

CHRISTINE DIMOULIS (St. Haralambos – Niles, IL)

Christine Dimoulis Iliopoulos (left), 2026 NHIBT HOF inductee, taking in a Celtics game at the TD Garden in Boston

Christine Dimoulis Iliopoulos was born in Chicago and raised in Skokie, IL, alongside her parents and younger sister. She discovered her passion for basketball a little later than most—during junior high—but fully committed herself to the sport the summer before freshman year. Nearly every day, she would bike to her local park with her basketball tucked inside a Jewel-Osco plastic bag, determined to improve.

That dedication carried her into high school, where she played on the school team for two years before being introduced to Greek Orthodox basketball through a friend from St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church in Niles. Because not every parish had a high school girls’ team, Christine decided to attend a few practices to see if the program would be a good fit. That decision changed everything.

It was there she met Coach D (Demetri Georgatsos), one of the most influential coaches in her basketball journey. He opened the door to NHIBT and other Orthodox tournament/leagues in Chicago and Detroit, putting Christine on a path filled with individual honors—including MVP, All-Star selections, and various notable distinctions—along with multiple championship seasons. More importantly, she gained teammates who would become lifelong friends.

Christine continued playing intramurals, tournaments, and pickup games throughout her 20s, and eventually returned to give back to the community that welcomed her. She volunteered as a coach for the high school girls’ team and helped run the 3-point contest at the AHEPA Marrow Tournament alongside Dr. John Venetos, tourney president. Her memories of Orthodox basketball remain deeply meaningful, and she credits many of her personal and professional successes to the coaches, mentors, and teammates who shaped her along the way—and even to the knee injuries that pushed her to become tougher, more determined, and more grateful for every moment on the court.

In her early 30s, Christine relocated to Boston, MA, where she now lives with her husband, Sotirios, and their three young boys—Evripidis, Nikolaos, and Theodoros. She continues to play the game that helped define her and hopes her children find a sport or hobby they love as much as she loves basketball. So far, her two oldest boys are already involved in local basketball leagues, and she’s hopeful the youngest will join them soon.

And who knows—maybe one day Christine will lead a team from Boston back to compete in the NHIBT tournament, bringing her story full circle. But until then, she is grateful for this tremendous honor and hopes it gives her some “cred” with her children as they grow up.

SOPHIA FUENTES (AHEPA MARROW, Chicago)

Sophia Fuentes, nhibt hall of fame, nhibt, national hellenic invitational basketball tournament, greek basketball, chicago greeks

Sophia Fuentes, 2026 NHIBT HOF inductee

I started playing basketball at the age of seven and quickly learned to love the game. I played for my grade school team and joined the AAU team Hoops Express from 7th grade up until my senior year of high school. I earned a varsity letter in three out of four years with the Lane Tech basketball team. Then it was off to play for North Central College in Naperville, IL.
I started playing basketball in the Greek church from biddy basketball at the Greek Orthodox Junior Olympics all the way until 31 years of age. I started with St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church when I was 12 years old playing with the older girls because I wanted to be like my older sister. My younger sister joined the St. Demetrios of Chicago basketball team and I then joined her at 16 years old. I played with them in every tournament until the birth of my first child.

I hung up my competitive basketball shoes and decided to shift my energy to running. I’ve currently completed 13 half marathons and a full marathon. I continue to focus on completing half marathons with my husband (Christian) and 3 kids (Hudson, Kellen and Tessa) cheering me on at the finish line.
I now get to experience basketball in the best way possible, by watching my 9-year old son and 7-year old daughter strap on their basketball shoes and see them thrive in a game our whole family loves.

TESSA HALDES (St. George, Chicago)

Tessa Haldes, nhibt hall of fame, nhibt, national hellenic invitational basketball tournament, greek basketball, chicago greeks

Tessa Haldes, 2026 NHIBT HOF inductee

Tessa Haldes, a Chicago native, got her start playing organized basketball for St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Chicago. During high school, she played at Whitney M. Young High School and with the Mac Irvin Lady Fire. She was a starter and team captain during her senior year, when her team went undefeated (34-0) en route to the city and 4A state championships. Her team ended the season ranked No. 2 in the nation and that team has since been inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) Hall of Fame (2024). During her senior year, Tessa was selected for the MaxPreps Girls’ Basketball Tour of Champions and played in the Chicago Public League Basketball Coaches Association (CPLBCA) All-Star Game.
As a freshman at Northwestern University, Tessa initially walked-on to the basketball team. She was subsequently awarded a full basketball scholarship for all four years. Tessa was recognized by the team with the Unsung Hero Award in 2013 and earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2015 and 2016. After graduating, Tessa was a starter for one season with A.O. Terpsithea while the team was competing in the top league in Greece.

Tessa credits her basketball accolades to her supportive, basketball-loving family who constantly encouraged her and practiced with her. She is the daughter of George and Shari Haldes, and her siblings are all accomplished athletes. Off the court, Tessa recently completed her Ph.D. in electrical engineering.
Throughout the years, Tessa has also played in (and won) numerous NHIBT and recreational tournaments. She is incredibly grateful for this honor.

COSTA PANAGOS (Ypsilanti, Chicago)

Friends and family. 2026 NHIBT HOF inductee Costa Panagos (left) and his Ypsilanti teammate and longtime friend John Economos, another NHIBT Hall of Famer, holding their kids prior to an NHIBT game

Costa Panagos was born in Chicago Heights, Illinois, and began his athletic journey at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church (then in Olympia Fields, now in Homer Glen). He participated in the inaugural Greek Orthodox Junior Olympics hosted by Sts. Constantine & Helen Church and quickly developed a love for basketball through church league competition.

In 1987, Assumption – one of the smaller parishes – fielded a team consisting of Costa and five others, including his two younger brothers, coached by Ernie Dunbar. That group captured the G.O.B.L. Championship, and Costa was named MVP. During those same years, his District 159 (Matteson, IL) school team compiled an impressive 47–1 record across seventh and eighth grade.

Costa went on to excel at Lincoln-Way High School in New Lenox as a multi-sport athlete in basketball and football. The 1990-1991 the Lincoln-Way basketball team finished 24–4, winning the S.I.C.A. West and matching the best record in school history at the time. He earned All-Conference and All-Area in both sports, and All-State Honorable Mention in football. In 1991, he was named Lincoln-Way Athlete of the Year, recognized as a Chicago Sun-Times Boys Basketball Player of the Week, and received the John P. Vlahos Award from AHEPA as the nation’s top Greek-American high school scholar-athlete.

Though basketball was always his true passion, Costa chose to continue his athletic career in football at Brown University. A four-year letterman and starter at Tight End, he graduated with a degree in Biology and was awarded the Eugene C. Swift Award, given for courage, character, fairness, and devotion to the team.

Though basketball was always his true passion, Costa chose to continue his athletic career in football at Brown University. A four-year letterman and starter at tight end, he graduated with a degree in biology and was awarded the Eugene C. Swift Award, given for courage, character, fairness, and devotion to the team.

Costa remained deeply connected to Greek basketball and became a long-time NHIBT competitor and repeat champion. For many years, he played with Ypsilanti alongside fellow NHIBT Hall of Famers including Coach Denny Kladis and John Economos. In 2006, Ypsilanti completed a historic 17–0 season across all major Chicago Greek tournaments — running the table in a year that remains one of the most memorable in modern Greek basketball.
Known for his physical play, relentless rebounding, and willingness to embrace any role necessary to win, Costa loved the game, the passion of competition, and the camaraderie built through battles on the court. Beyond championships, Greek basketball shaped many of Costa’s closest lifelong friendships. The NHIBT represents more than competition; it embodies faith, heritage, fellowship, and community. Many former rivals have become lifelong friends — a testament to the bonds forged through Greek basketball.

Today, Costa is a proud member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he serves on the Parish Council and is an active member of AHEPA. His wife Francesca currently serves as President of Philoptochos. They remain passionate supporters of Greek basketball and frequently travel back to Chicagoland so their children, Giorgios (15) and Elena (14), can compete in the NHIBT and continue the tradition that has meant so much to him.

Costa is deeply honored and humbled to be inducted into the NHIBT Hall of Fame.

STEVE PETRIDES (Holy Trinity, Chicago)

steve petrides, nhibt, nhibt hall of fame, national hellenic invitational basketball tournament, hellas chicago, chicago greeks, greek basketball

Steve Petrides and his kids at a recent Greek tournament

Born and raised on the northwest side of Chicago to Paul and Anna, baseball was my first love. While attending Socrates Greek School I was told I was tall and should play for the church team. The love affair with basketball began that Sunday to a packed Holy Trinity gym playing against churches that I have never heard of and then on to my first NHIBT Tournament at old Cicero Stadium. Traveling to away tournaments representing Chicago was a special moment especially with the friends and memories that were made.

I moved on to play at William Howard Taft High School in the competitive Red Division of the Chicago Public League under Coach Frank Hood, who named be captain my senior year playing on a team that finished 29-4 only to lose to the eventual city champs. Along the way I earned All-Area, All-Conference and All-Academic team honors. My only regret is that I did not play collegiately but with tournaments like the NHIBT, it allowed for the competition and camaraderie to continue well into the future. Playing for teams like Holy Trinity Chicago, Team Mougie, Team Hellas and many different collections of teams that were assembled with one question, “What are you doing this weekend?”. The game might have changed and the faces have aged but the love for Greek basketball will now and forever continue.
With so many people I would want to recognize and thank the one that stands out the most for me is Peter “Doc” Petrovas. From my first knee injury to the many ailments after each weekend tournament, Doc’s office was the gathering place for most Greek basketball players on Monday mornings. Being one of the hundreds of players he has worked on I would like thank him for all that he has done for me and also the legacy of the NHIBT Tournament.
Through the years, I cherished having my wife Kalliroe and my daughters Ana and Lia sitting in the stands cheering me on. Coaching my daughters in basketball and softball and getting to experience their success has been the utmost joy in my life. I have become a “Volleyball Dad” enjoying watching my girls play at all levels.

Terry’s NHIBT journey began as a high school junior and senior when he played for the St. John’s (Des Plaines, IL) boys high school team near the end of the Cicero Stadium era. In the GOBL, he was selected St. John’s MVP his senior year. The St. John’s boys, picking up two top area varsity players in the postseason, won two consecutive high school titles in the Detroit PanOrthodox Tournament with Terry as a key reserve. He also played in the AHEPA Marrow men’s division, and on a few Team Vidas squads in the NHIBT and GMMT. Additionally, Terry traveled with two NHIBT men’s teams as an assistant coach disguised as an end-of-the-bench player at the Denver and New Orleans national AHEPA tournaments.

For 20 years, Terry served as an NHIBT board member, handling publicity and the ad book. Today, he serves on the NHIBT Advisory Committee. Terry is also a member of the Supreme AHEPA Athletics Hall of Fame Selection Committee. He covered Greek sports in general for two decades for The Greek Star newspaper, and continues with the Hellenic News of America. Terry currently publishes the “Greek Hoop Scoop” Facebook group, promoting the tournaments and championing Greek American players.

To underscore his zealotry for the game, this ‘functional hoops addict’ brazenly self-anoints himself NBA GOAT arbiter, proclaiming Jordan to be “the far superior player to LeBron.”
In his professional sports life, Terry earned a Super Bowl Ring in 2015 as an Instant Replay Assistant for the National Football League. He was assigned to 14 playoff games, including two conference championship games, in 20 seasons. Today, he serves as founder/publisher of TheSportsIndex.com, an editorial, fintech and edtech initiative billed as the “benchmark sports stock market index.”
Terry is a graduate of John Hersey H.S. in Arlington Heights, IL and the Columbia College school of journalism in Chicago. He is most grateful to the NHIBT committee for recognizing him with this great honor.

Dr. Nick Roumpakis, 2026 NHIBT HOF inductee

I am deeply humbled and grateful to be inducted into the NHIBT Hall of Fame, and I sincerely thank the NHIBT Board for this meaningful honor.

My basketball journey began in East Chicago, Indiana. After losing my father at the age of six, my mother raised me as a single parent and stressed the importance of education and sports. Growing up in a city with a rich basketball tradition, I developed my love for the game playing pickup basketball with NHIBT Hall of Famer Teddy Kounelis in neighborhood alleys and playgrounds.

During high school, I served as student manager for the basketball teams at East Chicago Washington High School during an era when the city’s two high schools won back-to-back Indiana state championships. Our church team later became the first Indiana team to join Chicago’s Greek Orthodox Basketball League (GOBL), thanks to John Katsoulis, and was coached by NHIBT Hall of Famers Frank Kollintzas and John Kountoures alongside teammates including NHIBT Hall of Famers Chris Kouros and Alex Kountoures, along with George and Gus Angelopoulos, Thad Kanavos, Tom Gober, and Louie Kavourinos. Teddy and I played guard, and in our first GOBL season we won the Consolation Championship and later competed at the historic NHIBT at Cicero Stadium.

I earned a Biology degree from Indiana University Northwest and later a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from the National University of Health Sciences. I went on to practice orthopedics and sports medicine and served as team doctor for Calumet High School under legendary coach Carl Traicoff.

Dr. Nick Roumpakis and his Indiana teammates at Cicero Stadium in the NHIBT heyday

I continued coaching church basketball teams, including NHIBT Hall of Famer and overseas professional player Chris Kostouros, and later coached the girls team at Sts. Constantine & Helen in Merrillville, Indiana, leading them to the South League Championship game. In 1985, Teddy Kounelis and I competed in the AHEPA Tournament in Westlake, Ohio alongside Chicago’s elite players—Louis Atsaves, Peter Bartzis, Pete Kanavos, Plato Dimakos, and Greg Petrakos—all Hall of Famers.

Through Greek basketball I met my wife Patty, introduced by Dr. Peter Petrovas, who along with his wife Stella became our koumbari. Our son John later followed my love of the game, and I had the privilege of coaching his teams to back-to-back Thanksgiving and GOBL championships. One memorable NHIBT appearance came when our team defeated St. Demetrios and Hall of Fame coach Mike Skoubis (also an NHIBT HOF player) in overtime.

For the past eight years, I have been honored to serve on the NHIBT Board and as Chairman of the Scholarship Committee, helping give back to an organization that has meant so much to me. I remain grateful for the friendships, memories, and lifelong connection to Greek basketball and the NHIBT. All in all, THREE GENERATIONS of coaching Greek Basketball!

CHRIS TIRITAS (Denver AHEPA)

chris tiritas, nhibt, nhibt hall of fame, national hellenic invitational basketball tournament, greek basketball, denver ahepa

NHIBT 2026 HOF inductee Chris Tiritis (center) flanked by his two sons who are now playing hoops. Chris was a standout for Denver AHEPA and other teams during a long and successful Greek hoops career

During a college game day in early 1998 at Metro State University in Denver, Colorado, I was walking on campus towards the gymnasium to prepare for our game that evening when a stranger approached me and inquired if I was Greek. Confused yet intrigued, I confirmed that I was. The stranger mentioned that he was also Greek and played for the visiting Chadron State team that we were playing that night. He had noticed my last name on the roster and wanted to know more.

This introduction from Christos Vasilas, son of Ted Vasilas, the Athletic Director at the time of chapter 145 of the Denver AHEPA, marked the beginning of a 28-year journey of playing Greek basketball with some of my closest friends and teammates. Over the years, I have been fortunate to meet numerous lifelong friends from all over the country and the world while continuing to play the sport I love at a competitive level after my collegiate career ended.

Raised in Littleton, Colorado, since the age of five, my parents, Emmanuel (Manos) and Alice, raised my brother and me to play various sports throughout our childhood. However, basketball was always my favorite.  Dedication and hard work along with reaching a height of 6’8” enhanced my chances of securing a college scholarship and pursuing basketball while earning my degree.

I have been honored to be a part of and represent Denver AHEPA Chapter 145. Their unwavering support over the years has enabled me to continue playing with my Denver team and, most recently, various teams from Chicago and Boston.

While raising my two sons, Justice and Brody, both of whom are now members of the AHEPA and Sons of Pericles, they have accompanied me on numerous trips to Chicago to participate in their own games, observe my games, and now join me on the court. This marks my 27th year attending the NHIBT and other Chicago tournaments. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Bouzeos family and the NHIBT board for recognizing my contributions and inducting me into the Hall of Fame.

Lynne Bouzeos, NHIBT’s welcoming warmth

[CHICAGO, IL, USA) For about a half century, the first face you saw upon entering a gym hosting the annual National Hellenic Invitational Basketball Tournament was that of Lynne Bouzeos. She was waiting at the front desk – whether it be Cicero Stadium or Fenwick High School or a few other gyms throughout the years – with a wide smile and warm embrace. In our hearts, she was the “First Lady of the NHIBT.”

On January 23, at the age of 97, she passed peacefully in South Florida. She will be sorely missed.

phil bouzeos, lynne bouzeos, nhibt, greek basketball, national hellenic invitational basketball tournament

Phil and Lynne (c. 1980’s)

Lynne was married for 63 years to Phil Bouzeos, a former Champion athletic apparel account executive and equipment manager for the then Chicago Cardinals NFL team. Phil and his brother Tom Bouzeos ran the tournament on and off and/or together for the last half of the 20th century and into the second decade of the 21st. The Bouzeos brothers are synonymous with all-things NHIBT. Both were present at the inaugural tournament in 1933 and both are NHIBT Hall of Famers and Honorary Stewards.

While Tom and Phil (both now deceased) were the public faces of the tournament, everyone associated knows Lynne was instrumental to operations. From taking 20 to 50  phone calls, forwarding messages and accepting packages and other items, working the front desk of course and also cooking for a dozen or more guys and gals once a year as we took hours upon hours to finalize brackets, game times and gyms, little would have been accomplished without Lynne’s devotion and literally thousands of hours of volunteer work throughout the decades. She became a defacto mother figure to hundreds of NHIBT players and others.

Born Russian Orthodox Christian, Lynne and her Greek American husband Phil had three children of their own – Dean, Dawn, and Darcy. Each went on to become high achievers and outstanding members of the community. Combined, they produced five grandchildren and six great grandchildren for Phil and Lynne.

The only shot Lynne ever took at an NHIBT tournament. Fenwick H.S. (c. 2015). We coaxed her into it, for posterity. Glad we got the shot

A “Celebration of Life” memorial service for Lynne is scheduled for Saturday, March 15 at 11 am at Riverside Country Club, 2520 S. Des Plaines Avenue, North Riverside, IL.

May Lynne’s memory and loving spirit cast a giant beacon for all eternity.

The 2025 NHIBT is scheduled for March 28-30 in Lombard, IL.

NHIBT’s Demos lit up rooms and scoreboards

[CHICAGO, IL, USA] The National Hellenic Invitational Basketball Tournament in late 2024 lost another of its bright lights with the passing of NHIBT Hall of Famer George Demos. The committee deeply mourns his passing as George was beloved by all and could light up a meeting or a scoreboard lightning quick with his wide smile, lively conversational style, merry demeanor, and pinpoint long-range accuracy.

george demos, nhibt, greek basketball, national hellenic invitational basketball tournament

George receiving a trophy in a 1990’s tournament

A graduate of Sullivan H.S. on Chicago’s far north side in the late 1960’s, George was an absolute phenom his senior season, averaging 39 points per game and earning top All-City honors. In an era before the three-point line, George routinely launched 20 to 24-foot long-range shots and piled up points at a rapid pace. Glance at the crowd for a minute and boom, George just added another 8 points. Had the three-point line been in effect, he likely would have averaged 45 his senior year. George went on to star at the University of Illinois Chicago when it was located at Navy Pier.

George made many headlines back in the day

After college, George worked as a Chicago Park District facilities supervisor for 20 years. He also became a prolific referee, working his way up to officiate major NCAA Division I hoops. Additionally, for four decades all the way through his last days, he served on the NHIBT board and was in charge of officiating assignments.

George played in various recreational leagues well into his 60’s. Very few loved the game or were a more devoted hard-court junkie than George. If there were a game being played, chances are George was behind it or out front. You always got the sense of action with George around.

In the early 2000’s, the NBA tinkered with its rules and the Chicago Bulls brought in George to officiate practices and better acquaint players with rules philosophy. Two of George’s closest friends were former Bulls center Dave Corzine and Joe Ponsetto, former chief of Special Prosecutions for the Illinois Attorney General’s office. Both men were DePaul University basketball stars and local area products who played with George in various tournaments and leagues.

In his private life, George was married to first wife Mary Jane and the two produced two children, daughter Nicole and son Tom. George later married Bonnie, a former world-class martial artist, and the two were inseparable throughout the remainder of his days.

A friend and mentor to many, a generous soul and warm human being, George will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, shooter. May your memory be eternal.

Pro sports agent George Andrews blazed path for Greek Americans

George Andrews (in suit and tie) watches his client Magic Johnson celebrate the Los Angeles Lakers’ 1981 NBA title

[CHICAGO, IL, USA] The Greek American community is mourning the loss of one of its greatest sports trailblazers, George James Andrews (1949-2024). A native of Elmhurst, IL who graduated York High School and the University of Illinois, Andrews passed away last week. During the past few years, he had been serving on the board of the National Hellenic Invitational Basketball Tournament (NHIBT) and had become an instrumental contributor.
Andrews was the first and most prominent Greek American professional sports player agent. In his heyday (late 70’s through mid-90’s), he boasted a blue-chip client roster that rivaled any agent in sports. Two of his most widely-known clients were NBA Hall of Fame players Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Isiah Thomas. Andrews was with Magic, a Lakers great, when the team won its first NBA championship under Magic, with Magic being awarded Finals MVP honors.
Among Andrews’ non-basketball clients was Evelyn Ashford, the top female track star in the world during the time she was represented by Andrews.
Other notables represented by Andrews are NBA greats Reggie Theus, Mark Aguirre, and Rolando Blackman, and standouts Jim Brewer, Jerry Sichting, Derek Harper, and Nick Weatherspoon. Andrews, Harper, and Weatherspoon are all fellow University of Illinois at Champaign alumni. Andrews, who friends described as a basketball junkie who was always in the gym, served as equipment manager for Illini men’s basketball. He later earned a JD at Illinois in addition to his undergrad.
Later in his career, Andrews switched sides to join the front office of the Memphis Grizzlies, then an expansion NBA franchise. Andrews helped ownership get started on firm footing.
One of his Greek associates, Michigan State University head basketball coach and later top team broadcaster Gus Ganakas, became a mentor to Andrews and opened doors in the Spartans family. Andrews would later gain introduction to young Earvin Johnson, a budding MSU superstar about to win an NCAA championship. Johnson became one of his first clients. Another Greek hoops connection is Ganakas’ son Gary Ganakas, who played in and later was inducted into the NHIBT Hall of Fame.
The Andrews wake is set for Monday from 4 to 8 pm at Westchester Conboy Funeral Home in Illinois. The funeral is scheduled for Tuesday at 10 am, beginning at Holy Apostles Church with internment at Elmwood Cemetery. For more details, visit his Chicago Sun-Times obituary.

NHIBT standout selected for Greek National Juniors Team!

Illinois' Nikki Kerstein is headed to Greece to play with the National Juniors Team. Image credit: W. Kerstein

[CHICAGO, IL, USA] The Chicago Greek community is beaming with pride this week as one of our own was recently selected to play for the National Juniors basketball team for Greece! At just 15 years of age, Deerfield High School (Ilinois) All-State player Nicolette “Nikki’ Kerstein, a National Hellenic Invitational Basketball Tournament (NHIBT) standout as well, traveled to New York this Spring for the Greek SuperLeague Athletic Academy basketball showcase event, organized by James Pristouris. Members of Federation of Greece Athletics were on hand to scout players whom they hope will one day represent Greece in the highest levels of international competition. Nikki was the only player, male or female, chosen to join the national team at this time.

Already the news has hit the Motherland, with Nikki getting featured on ANT TV in Greece. “I was really excited to be selected, and also being the only player picked,” Nikki told us. “It’s an awesome opportunity.”

Nikki, A 5’8 point guard, is a lightning-quick, silky-smooth ball handler, deft passer, ferocious defender, and as an added bonus is arguably the best shooter in the entire state of Illinois, having gone downstate her freshman year for the annual three point shootout. She’s so advanced, both physically and talent-wise, for her age group, we’ve been informed Greece might even play her at times with squads two to three years above her age level.

“That girl puts in the work,” said Deerfield girls head coach Nicole Keith. “She could have a bad shooting night and then go right back in the gym. She’s determined to shoot 1000 shots in and above what’s required in practice. She’s the first one in the gym, her and her sister, and last ones to leave. Nikki won the 100% effort award at our school. She truly embodies that you play how you practice. She’s going 100%. She deserves all that she’s receiving. I’m so incredibly honored to have her.”

We asked the coach about demeanor. “She’s very stoic so you’d never know the emotions going on in her,” revealed Keith. “Nikki was quiet in her own right. She led by her play. But there were moments when someone said something and Nikki knew when she was right and she’d correct it. She’s the quiet assassin. Even last year as a freshman, you’d never know, in close games, she’s never shaken.”

The coach continued with effusive praise. “She also has a very high IQ. Sees the floor incredibly well. She can play the point and shooting guard. She’s hitting at a high percentage of her shots. Knows where to be with or without the ball. I think she’s got so much untapped upside.”

Nikki and her older sister, Alexis “Lexi” Kerstein, this past winter led Deerfield to its first-ever trip to the Final 4, playing in one of the state’s most talent-rich regions. Lexi, also an All-State selection, graduated high school in May and will continue her basketball career at the University of Vermont this Fall. She may at some point join Team Greece but for now her college commitment, which begins in August, precludes her from competing.

The Kerstein sisters were sensations from their freshman year on, gaining All-State recognition. As a freshman and sophomore, Nikki accomplished something no other player in the state matched: She’s the only player to record 500 or more points, shoot 50-percent or better, record more than 125 assists, more than 125 steals, more than 125 rebounds, and less than 2.0 turnovers per game. Nikki also maintains a 3.9 GPA out of 4.0. She plays for Illinois Elite in the AAU, and has already been offered 31 college scholarships and counting.

The two girls come from a rich athletic tradition. Their father, Greek American William Kerstein, was an All-American football running back at Deerfield in the late 80’s who signed to play at Miami University in Florida. “It’s like a family reunion on the walls of our school, with all the pictures of dad, Lexi, and now me too,” said Nikki, who’s also played a few games at her mom’s alma mater. Her dad was also MVP of the high school division of the Harry Agganis Memorial Basketball Tournament in Massachusetts, the nation’s second-largest and second longest-running national Greek tournament. William’s grandfather, Pakia native John Kaulentis, is an NHIBT Hall-of-Famer. The girls’ mother, Anastasia “Tasia” Georganas Kerstein, is a former state champion and All-State basketball player at Maine West High School who went on to become a four-year starter at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Tasia is also well-known for singing in her father Ionnis “John” Georganas’ popular Greek band, the Opa Orchestra. John, who hails from Icalia, was one of the finest bouzouki players in the states.

Back to hoops, Nikki relates the experience playing with, and sometimes competing against her older sister. “We’re always pushing one another to be better. It’s definitely competitive. It’s good to push each other. Brings out the better sides of our games. But we’re always supporting each other at the same time. She promotes me and I love talking about her too.” Their coach chimed in, “There’s a rivalry. They’re very competitive. There’s some sister moments where I had to step in on a couple occasions. But they have great respect for each other on that court.”

Favorite thing about Greece? “It looks amazing,” Nikki said. “The art and temples and relics. The culture going back thousands of years, the great thinkers and philosophers, is really inspirational. And my mom told me so much about Mykonos I just have to visit. My favorite movie is Mama Mia. Me, Lexi and my mom have seen it maybe 100 times and the scenes in Greece are incredible. We can sing every line of the movie. My Big Fat Greek Wedding is another go-to film. Once you see those images, you think wow I just have to go there.”

As most youngsters are wont to do at her age, she likes to hang out with friends “driving around, movies, social media.” But what does Nikki love most about basketball? “It’s really a place where I can let everything go,” revealed Nikki. “It’s almost like I’m stress free, not a care in the world.”

In preparation for Greece and European tournaments, Nikki has hit up Google translate “a lot, trying to figure out common sentences. At least the main words so I can try to communicate and interact better in the native language. That’s going to be a big part of my experience. Since New York, I’ve made an effort to read up on basketball in Europe too. I feel like it’s going to be a different style and I’m bringing a different style. Hopefully I can bring something new to them and we can we can all learn from each other.”

The Kerstein girls played for Papaflessas in the NHIBT and at the Detroit Pan Orthodox Tournament.
